NextBillion.net: Village Enterprise Featured for Helping Small Farmer with SMART Technology
Tuesday, June 24, 2014: Working in extremely remote drought ridden communities in East Africa, Aid for Africa member Village Enterprise developed SMART (Smarter Market Analysis Risk Tool) to provide small subsistence farmers with the information they need to make informed decisions about their crops. SMART works on Android phones and helps farmers capture price, risk, and demand data from local village markets, information from expert agronomists on seed, pests, and other inputs to agriculture, and “best practices” from local farmers. The tool is unique because it provides information at the village-market level – markets they can reliably access. Similar tools only provide data for larger more lucrative towns that are inaccessible for many small farmers. Read the blog
