East African Center for the Empowerment of Women and Children

Helps women and children living in extreme poverty in rural Kenya to help themselves through high-impact, cost-effective health and education programs and small-business development.

east-african-center-photo1The East African Center for the Empowerment of Women and Children (EAC), based in Takaungu, Kenya, helps people to improve their own lives by empowering women and children, providing assistance to communities, and providing access to resources and tools for change.

Our approach is community-driven, low-tech, and sustainable. We target our efforts specifically to what a community needs, and we are guided at every step by the community. We focus on increasing literacy for women and children, improving the health of the community, and eradicating poverty.

In the village of Takaungu, community members told us of their need for education and training programs and health services. With their help, we built the Vutakaka Community Resource Center, which is now the hub of our programs, and a primary school.

  • east-african-center-photo2Education. We hold classes for adults in reading, math, and business skills at the Center, while children ages three to eight attend a new primary school. The Center’s library provides a wealth of reading materials and a place for after-school tutoring. Programs are taught by local instructors as well as by volunteers.
  • Poverty Alleviation. We offer business classes that help women learn math, accounting and management skills. We also formed a sewing cooperative, which teaches women tailoring skills. Several women have established their own businesses, and are creating items for sale under a Takaungu label.
  • Health Education. We educate people on topics such as maternal and child health, nutrition, and HIV/AIDS, through weekly lectures and a health library.
