Akilah Institute for Women

Transforming young African women’s lives with practical and market-relevant skills to help them find meaningful employment. Classes include English, hospitality, tourism, leadership, and public speaking.

Akilah Institute for Women empowers young women in East Africa to transform their lives by equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to find meaningful employment and launch ventures in the fastest growing sectors of the economy.

Akilah is founded on the core values of respect for community, leadership and service, and the highest standards of personal conduct with a relentless commitment to excellence.

Founded in 2010 as a scalable model of transformational business education for young women, Akilah offers a two-year Business Diploma with a focus in Hospitality Management or Entrepreneurship, and works closely with the local private sector to develop market-relevant curricula and to ensure job placement for all graduates.

Akilah is committed to providing opportunities to low-income women who would not otherwise have the means to pursue higher education by offering scholarship support that covers up to 90 percent of total tuition fees.

Over the next ten years, Akilah plans to develop a network of campuses in Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, and Uganda. Each campus will embody the holistic educational values of the Akilah model, and offer academic programs that are developed in response to the needs of the local industry.
