New York Times: Green Belt Movement Founder Wangari Maathai Dies
Tuesday, September 27, 2011: Professor Wangari Maathai, Nobel Peace laureate, Kenyan environmentalist, and founder of the Green Belt Movement died in Nairobi, Kenya, Sunday, September 25. She was the first African woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize.
The Green Belt Movement, which began as a grassroots tree-planting program to address the challenges of deforestation, soil erosion, and a lack of water is now a vehicle for empowering women and their families.
