GOOD: Akilah Institute Executive Director Writes About Their Investment in Women
Friday, March 8, 2013: Lisa Martilotta, Executive Director of Aid for for Africa member the Akilah Institute, writes about their investment in the education of East African women by establishing Rwanda’s only college for women. Students pursue three-year business diplomas in market-relevant fields and 100 percent of the 39 graduates in 2012 are employed. Akilah pays up to $3,000 of the $3,350 tuition fee and helps students secure loans for the remainder. With only one percent of Rwanda’s population having access to higher education, and only one-third of that group being female, Akilah is paving the way for young women to join Rwanda’s fast growing economy.
