Young Heroes Foundation
Swaziland has the world’s highest rate of HIV/AIDS, 70,000 orphans, and 15,000 child-headed households. Young Heroes Foundation works to keep the Swazi orphans alive, healthy, and living together in their homes and in their communities, where they have the greatest sense of safety and security.
Working with community leaders and local volunteers, Young Heroes identifies and works with orphan families in rural villages throughout the country. We then link the families with sponsors who provide monthly stipends for food, clothing, and other necessities such as school fees. All of the sponsorship money (100 percent) goes directly to the family. We ensure that the children have nutritious food to eat every day.
The organization’s services also include medical care, which includes comprehensive support for orphans who are infected with HIV. For those children who are over the age of 18, Young Heroes provides training and business education so they can find employment.
Young Heroes is unique among programs that use a child- sponsorship model. Many other programs pool funds for community programs, such as schools or water projects, from which the children eventually benefit. Young Heroes provides support to families directly and a direct link between donor and family. Donors can sponsor a specific family and have the opportunity to communicate with its members, as well as to receive regular reports on the family’s progress.
