Solar Light for Africa
Provides light and energy to rural Africa by harnessing the power of the sun. Works with U.S. and African churches, nongovernmental organizations, and African governments.Solar Light for Africa, Ltd. is a nonprofit Christian organization whose mission is to transform lives and empower the people of Africa, by providing light and energy using the natural power of the sun. With the use of solar energy we work to eliminate the use of kerosene, which is toxic and dangerous in the home, and reduce deforestation, which results from the use of trees as fuel wood.
Established in 1997, Solar Light’s goal is to install some 1,000 solar energy units each year. We have worked in Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda and are expanding into West Africa. We have already seen great benefits at our completed projects:
In rural schools, lighting allows for evening tutoring programs, resulting in extra income for teachers and better grades for students.- In rural villages, lighting of homes has helped families develop micro-enterprise projects. In one case, a woman wanted light for her hen house; knowing that chickens will not eat when they cannot see their food, she thought a light would increase egg production. Within a year, she had nearly doubled the number of eggs she took to market, all because of one light bulb wired to a solar panel.
- Solar electrification at health centers provides for refrigeration of medicines, charging of batteries for small diagnostic tools, and clean water.
The sun rises and sets every day in Africa. Access to the sun’s energy is unlimited, but largely untapped. Please help us to electrify 100 villages, 70 hospitals, and 70 schools over the next ten years.
