Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project
For more than two decades, has provided veterinary care in the wild for the highly endangered mountain gorillas of east-central Africa, helping to sustain the species. There are only about 700 mountain gorillas left in the world, in two small national parks in Africa. These highly endangered animals suffer from poaching, human-induced injuries, and loss of habitat. They face survival threats each day, with health issues at the top of the list.
The Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project (MGVP) has been caring for the health of these animals for more than twenty years. It is one of the world’s first programs to care for endangered species in their own habitats. Every day, our dedicated veterinarians risk their lives on the high mountain slopes of east-central Africa to track and treat mountain gorillas. MGVP has been recognized as the best organization of its kind by the world scientific community and has played a major role in increasing the number of mountain gorillas by 17 percent in the last decade. Specifically, we
Monitor the health of known mountain gorillas populations on a regular basis in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.- Provide hands-on medical care for mountain gorillas if their problems are life-threatening or induced by humans.
- Monitor and research the health of domestic animals and wildlife that live on the edges of mountain gorilla habitat, as they can affect the health of mountain gorillas.
- Provide an employee health program for gorilla trackers and others, because human health problems can affect mountain gorillas.
- Help train African veterinarians.
- Provide health care for orphaned animals.
