Each day, approximately 700 babies are infected with HIV, most of them in sub-Saharan Africa. Half of children infected with HIV will die before the age of two if their HIV is untreated, and AIDS is a leading cause of maternal mortality in Africa.
What’s tragic is that mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS is almost entirely preventable with inexpensive medical intervention, which can also enable HIV-positive mothers to live long and healthy lives. Yet the stigma of HIV and a severe shortage of doctors and nurses in Sub Saharan Africa make it difficult for many women to get the care they need.
mothers2mothers (m2m) is changing that. We train, employ, and empower mothers living with HIV to work alongside doctors and nurses in understaffed health clinics, providing essential health education and support to other HIV-positive mothers and their families. These inspirational “Mentor Mothers” use their first-hand knowledge of HIV to help women come to terms with their diagnoses and access the medical care critical to protecting their babies from HIV and keeping themselves healthy. Because Mentor Mothers are employed, they have financial security and become respected role models in their communities, reducing stigma and discrimination associated with HIV.
m2m has reached more than 1.2 million women in nine countries in Sub Saharan Africa. Currently, we provide services at nearly 400 sites in Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, South Africa, Swaziland, and Uganda.
