Malawi Project
Supplies medicine, farming equipment, volunteer teachers, books, and food aid to children and vulnerable families in Malawi, Central Africa. In the U.S., sponsors “Kids Helping Kids.”Malawi, a small country in southeastern Africa, is the third poorest nation on earth. Most people live in houses made of mud and thatch, and 95 percent survive on subsistence farming. In the countryside there are few cars, telephones, or electricity, and almost no health care. HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, and malnutrition are rampant killers; average life expectancy is under 37 years of age. In spite of these hardships, the people of Malawi are kind, respectful, and caring, and the country is a functioning democracy.
The Malawi Project began in 2000 with a commitment to “change the health care of the nation.” We are now making a difference in the lives of millions of men, women, and children, with agricultural, educational, medical, and food relief. Among our programs:
Starting with a focus on the health care crisis, an early project was construction of Madalitso (Blessings) Hospital, a 100-bed facility. Today, three hospital buildings provide health care to 10,000 people a year.- We have shipped nearly 200 cargo containers of medical supplies to health care facilities throughout the country.
- With the help of corporate sponsors, the Madalitso Food Plant produces enough food to provide 19 million nutritious meals a year.
- We started an agricultural training center, where farm families get training in new technologies.
What began with one hospital has become twelve sites throughout the country that focus on medical care, agricultural development, education, and a helping hand for the people of Malawi.
