H2O for Life
More than half of the schools in rural Africa lack water and sanitation facilities. As a result, students miss many days of school due to water and sanitation related illnesses. Girls are more likely to drop out of school when they do not have access to adequate latrines. H2O for Life is changing that by creating partnerships between schools in the United States and schools in Africa to improve the access of students in Africa and elsewhere to safe water and latrines at school.
H2O for Life works to improve the health and well being of the community through interventions at schools. Since 2007 H2O for Life and its partner schools have funded water projects in the developing world worth more than $1 million, including projects in eight countries in Sub Saharan Africa. H2O for Life worked with 100,000 students in the United States, Canada, and the UK to complete 600 service-learning projects, which helped fund more than 450 life-saving water projects.
As part of this program, U.S. students study the global water crisis and become informed global citizens and advocates for water issues. Students in Africa receive clean drinking water, functioning latrines, and hygiene and health education. Our programs include building hand washing stations, drilling wells, building latrines, and installing water tanks.
