The Fregenet Foundation

Provides primary education to needy children in Ethiopia through schools that also serve community health needs, ultimately reducing poverty, AIDS, gender inequality, political oppression.

The Fregenet Foundation is dedicated to creating educational opportunities for impoverished children in Ethiopia. It was founded in 2004 in the loving memory of Fregenet Tafesse Woubshet, a 29-year-old Ethiopian-American woman whose dream was to improve the plight of children in Ethiopia.

In fewer than eight years, Fregenet established a school in Ethiopia that educates, feeds, clothes, and provides basic medical care to 245 children between the ages of four and ten. The Foundation employs nineteen teachers and other staff members to meet the students’ needs and pays all costs of their education, including textbooks, uniforms, breakfast, hot lunches, and covering prescription drugs.

The Fregenet Foundation’s approach is community based, in which partnerships are cultivated with health agencies, community organizations, orphanages, and agencies that can sponsor students. We maintain close contacts with families, sponsors, and orphanages to monitor progress and assure success.

The Foundation is currently working to create a modern school building on the property, complete with classrooms, cafeteria, computer lab, library, and clinic. Our long-term objective is to replicate this educational model across Ethiopia, building as many schools and educating as many needy children as we possibly can.
