The Fistula Foundation
The Fistula Foundation plays a vital, unique role to help women who suffer from fistula receive life-transforming surgery.
Fistula is an injury that devastates lives of women in the world’s poorest countries and most rural areas where mothers still deliver babies without medical help. A woman enduring prolonged, unrelieved obstructed labor nearly always loses her baby. If she survives, she is often subjected to yet another horror – obstetric fistula – rendering her incontinent and uncontrollably leaking urine and wastes. Untreated, these women are often deserted by their husbands and shunned by their communities. Treated, she can live a healthy, productive life.
We fund more fistula surgeries in more places than any nonprofit not receiving government financing in the world. We fund the very best organizations helping in the places where need for fistula treatment is greatest, partnering with the most respected, productive and effective hospitals and local doctors. In the last four years, we’ve grown from focusing exclusively on Ethiopia to funding 42 projects in 18 additional countries, 10 in Africa.
The Foundation adheres to the highest standards for financial management and is dedicated to keeping operating expenses low. Since 2006 the Foundation has earned the Better Business Bureau Seal for meeting its Standards for Charity Accountability and 4-Star ratings from the charity rating service Charity Navigator, ranking the Foundation in the top 3 percent of all nonprofits evaluated.
