Alliance for African Assistance

Assists African refugees, immigrants, asylum seekers, and war and torture victims, particularly women and children in Uganda and the US, helping to restore their self-sufficiency, dignity, and respect.

The Alliance for African Assistance assists refugees, immigrants, the economically challenged and the underserved to become self-sufficient members of their communities.  In the United States, we help newly arrived refugees in the San Diego area adjust to American life and culture. In Uganda, we provide nutrition, clothing, medical, dental, and schooling to distressed men, women, and especially children and the elderly.

After more than 20 years of conflict, many children living in Uganda have known nothing but war during their lifetimes. Their families have been decimated by war and disease. At the heart of our work in Uganda are programs to ease the suffering of these children and help them get an education. We have reached more than 3,500 children with preventative health services, counseling, educational opportunities, and direct child sponsorship programs.

The Alliance’s original mission, at its founding in 1989, was to address the needs of San Diego’s growing African refugee population. Today we remain dedicated to providing social, cultural, and educational support to all refugees in the resettlement process. Such assistance includes preparing host families, securing safe and affordable housing, help with rent and transportation, health screenings, enrolling children in school, English language classes and translation services, and job assistance and training. We have successfully resettled more than 1,350 refugees from Somalia, Sudan, Congo, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Ethiopia, Liberia, Eritriea, Vietnam, Iran, Kosovo, Bosnia, Iraq, and Russia.
