A Self-Help Assistance Program
A Self-help Assistance Program, known as ASAP Africa, helps communities in Zimbabwe and Malawi affected by poverty, poor education, and HIV/AIDS improve their own lives through programs that teach self-reliance.ASAP Africa empowers disadvantaged rural communities in Southern Africa to bring about sustainable improvements. Tom Arsenault and Elizabeth Bara, who met and married as Peace Corps Volunteers in Swaziland, created ASAP Africa in 1992 to recognize and harness the enormous potential and energy that exists in rural Africa.
Some of our accomplishments include
- More than 25,000 people educated in rural microfinance, becoming better able to provide for their families independently.
- 9,000 people have access to locally grown medicinal herbs
- 46,000 students engaged in educational math clubs
- 145 new classrooms built
- 8,600 Jatropha trees planted
Today, ASAP Africa’s programs are managed and implemented by local citizens from Zimbabwe and Malawi with the active participation from the communities served. People with a genuine understanding of the problems, workable solutions, and most importantly, people with a vested interest in seeing projects succeed.
