Simantoi Kilama
Simantoi was sponsored by Aid for Africa member, Maasai Girls Education Fund from 2000 to 2006. Simantoi’s father was adamantly opposed to educating girls, as were all other members of her family, except her mother. Her defiance, determination, and ultimate success have now won them over and paved the way for younger girls in her family. Simantoi is currently pursuing a degree in psychology at the University of Nairobi. She lives on her own and works as a public health nurse for the Fatima Clinic while she is attending school.
Every month, Simantoi sends part of her salary home to her mother, which helps with the cost of school uniforms and medical bills for family members. Her financial support to her family totals more each year than the one-time dowry that Yiamoi’s father would have received from his daughter’s marriage. Her father now likes to brag about his educated daughter, and has ordered all of his sons to send their daughters to school.
