Above, woman and children sit in the back of a police truck as they flee ethnic clashes in Naivasha, Kenya, in late January 2008. (AP Photo/Karel Prinsloo) The extraordinary events during recent weeks in Kenya have left more than a 1,000 people dead and hundreds of thousands of people homeless due to post-election violence. Assaults on women and young girls have increased and children have suffered at an extraordinary level. Almost half of Aid for Africa’s members work in Kenya—many are there exclusively and some of them are headquartered there. All of them have felt the effects of the crisis. Currently our members are struggling to keep their programs functioning while assisting victims of the violence. In the long run, as the crisis is brought under control, these organizations will need increased long-term support to rebuild and expand their programs. They need your help now. Please give on-line to our members working in Kenya listed below. The violence is having tragic economic consequences for Kenya’s neighbors as well, particularly for the countries of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, which rely on the transport of goods through Kenya to and from the port of Mombassa on Kenya’s coast. For a list of members who work in Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, please view our Where We Work map and click on the country of interest.
