South Africa Partners

Helps improve health care, education, and leadership in South Africa through partnerships with local communities and organizations. Focuses on the most vulnerable--women and children.

South Africa Partners brings together the skills, talent, and resources needed to build the new South Africa. We strive to empower those who remain most vulnerable — women, children, and communities struggling to overcome the impact of former apartheid policies.

Working with state and local governments, academic institutions, and community organizations, we are creating a model for international development. Partnerships focus on addressing social, political, and economic needs in a manner that strengthens communities, builds institutional capacity, and fosters local leadership.

Projects include:

  • south-africa-partners-photo2Supporting efforts to improve health services, through partnerships that train health care professionals, help hospitals gain access to important technologies, and promote international research collaborations.
  • Helping to build the capacity of struggling schools. To date, we have made over 3,000 high quality books available, provided 22 grants to schools for the development of libraries, and offered training to teachers in how to best use books and library materials.
  • Developing a vibrant network of more than 500 people living with HIV/AIDS. Community activists work in partnership with government and civil society to identify service delivery gaps and design interventions that will improve access to life saving treatment and support. The network has been noted by the National Department of Health in South Africa as a model program.
  • Launching the Let Us Read Together initiative that promotes great children’s literature from the new South Africa.
