Children of Uganda

Empowers African orphans living in extreme poverty to lead healthier lives.  Priority programs emphasize the education and well-being of Uganda’s most vulnerable children and their guardians.

Uganda has the largest orphan population per capita of any country in the world and is home to some 8 million orphans and vulnerable children whose families have been devastated by HIV/AIDS or extreme poverty.

children-of-uganda-photo1For the past 20 years, Children of Uganda has provided access to quality education, life skills training, food, clothing, shelter and medical care for thousands of orphans and vulnerable children in the Rakai, Mukono and Kampala districts of Uganda. We support children in primary and secondary schools and partner with vocational schools, teacher training colleges and universities to offer advanced learning opportunities for our students.

Children of Uganda also undertakes a number of community outreach and advocacy programs:

• Tour of Light – an East African cultural music, dance and storytelling tour of the U.S. that raises awareness and funding on behalf of our mission.
• Philip’s House – a program that provides living, healthcare, physiotherapy and education to mentally and physically handicapped young adults.
• Community Response to Child Labor – an initiative to increase awareness of the adverse effects of child labor and to support community action in protecting child rights.
• Family Empowerment – an effort to support women’s small business development by providing access to skills training, counseling, income-generating projects and loans.
• St. Kizito (Sabina) Primary Boarding School – Board and volunteer supported construction of a library, community resource center, water tanks, solar panels and playground as well as school building repairs.
